Several forthcoming Web site performance monitoring services will try to bring real-time management capabilities to ever-expanding enterprises.
Keynote Systems Inc. this week plans to launch Keynote Application Perspective-Outside Edition. The self-service transaction monitoring service is aimed at IT operations and application managers looking to monitor performance of multistep transactions from multiple locations.
The lower-cost service will complement Keynotes recently released behind-the-firewall monitoring offering.
Outside Edition measures Domain Name System look-up time, initial connection time, Secure Sockets Layer performance, redirection time, request time, base page download time, client time and content download time from as many as 16 cities at 15-minute intervals.
Keynote users at Tribune Media Services Inc. see the new low-cost option as an adjunct to existing Keynote services, said John Wolak, director of enterprise systems, in Chicago. “If I have a mix, I can end up saving some money [without sacrificing functionality],” Wolak said.
The monitoring service, which also provides performance base lines, reports, alarms and diagnosis, starts at $70 per Web page per month.
The service comes as business on the Web and demand for better management have increased.
Gómez Inc., for example, has reported nine consecutive quarters of revenue growth. The company plans to add new last-mile points of presence to its service offerings. In Version 5.0, due by the end of next month, Gómez will add 10,000 points of presence from individual PCs.
“With the [economic] recovery, people are coming out of a bunker mentality,” said Paul Leroux, chief technology officer at Gómez, in Waltham, Mass. “When you first do that, you want to spend carefully. You have to know the metrics about how your most important channel performs.”
“We do see CIOs engaging in new projects—mostly in enhancing existing applications with legacy system integration and Web services,” said Dharmesh Thakker, senior product manager for application performance management at Keynote, in San Mateo, Calif.
“The challenge of managing performance in real time and delivering on user SLAs [service-level agreements] gets more complicated [with complex applications]. Thats why you need end-to-end performance monitoring and the ability to drill down to root cause, so you can deliver consistent performance to end users,” Thakker said.
In addition to Keynote and Gómez, Boca Internet Technologies Inc.s AlertSite division is moving on the trend. It is planning on doubling in size each year and will add 20 new monitoring sites this year, according to officials in Boca Raton, Fla.
