China’s future moon base could have an unusual set of workers roaming outside: robot dogs scouting the terrain, handling scientific tasks, and helping prepare the surface for human settlement.
Researchers working on China’s International Lunar Research Station have outlined a model in which astronauts work alongside autonomous quadruped robots on the moon. The machines could patrol the base, identify hazards, collect samples, extract local resources, and assist with construction as China works toward a basic lunar station by 2035.
For China, the proposal links two major technology priorities: building a long-term lunar presence and developing autonomous machines that can operate where human labor is risky or limited.
Robot dogs could scout, build, and patrol
South China Morning Post reported that the concept came from researchers at the China Academy of Space Technology, the country’s leading spacecraft developer. Their blueprint pairs three astronauts with intelligent machines, including two robot dogs each directed by one crew member, as they move across the lunar surface.
The researchers described the approach as “astronaut-led decision-making and autonomous robots carrying out the work.” Tasks could include scouting hazardous terrain, searching for scientifically useful rocks, harvesting water ice, mining minerals, and building structures with materials found on the moon.
According to Interesting Engineering, the machines could also handle more routine jobs around the station, including inspections, environmental regulation, cleaning, plant care, and food preparation.
Researchers also suggested the robots could interact with astronauts and help ease the psychological strain of long-term isolation on the moon.
The moon creates a harder robotics problem
Getting robot dogs to work reliably on the moon will require more than mobility. The researchers said lunar AI systems will have far less real-world training data than systems on Earth, leaving little room for error in an unfamiliar environment.
Communication and navigation will add another layer of difficulty.
SCMP noted that future crews would need new lunar infrastructure before astronauts and robots could coordinate reliably over long distances, meaning the machines may also need to make more decisions on their own when connectivity is limited.
How robot dogs fit into China’s moon base plans
China aims to land astronauts on the moon before 2030 and complete a basic version of the International Lunar Research Station near the lunar south pole by 2035, according to SCMP. Plans call for the station to expand into a larger complex, including a lunar-orbiting component, by 2045.
Reaching those goals would require more than launch vehicles and habitats. The researchers’ proposal suggests China is also considering the machines needed to inspect facilities, traverse hazardous terrain, extract resources, and keep a lunar outpost operating between human interventions.
The robot dogs remain a research proposal rather than a confirmed deployment plan.
Still, the concept shows how China’s space program is beginning to treat robotics, autonomous decision-making, and lunar infrastructure as parts of the same problem. If the ILRS develops on schedule, some of the most important workers on China’s future moon base may never need a spacesuit.
