While most drones are grounded the moment a little fog or rain rolls in, a new player just proved that “bad weather” is now a choice rather than a limitation.

Chinese drone manufacturer GDU took the stage at CES 2026 to unveil the UAV-P300, an enterprise-grade machine they are calling the world’s first drone equipped with “AI sight” capable of piercing through thick fog and heavy rain.

Unlike standard cameras that simply struggle with low visibility, this drone uses a triple-threat of optical, electronic, and AI-powered de-fogging tech to sharpen its vision when things get murky. The standout feature of the UAV-P300 is its ability to boost visibility by 50% in challenging conditions like rain, fog, or dust.

This new tech is essentially an onboard brain that processes images in real-time to “see” what a human pilot cannot.

“With the UAV-P300, we’re giving operators clearer vision, safer navigation, and reliable performance in the kinds of environments where accuracy truly matters,” stated Jie Leng, GDU’s R&D Director, in a press release.

Day-to-night imaging

The drone’s 50-megapixel wide-angle sensor works with an advanced starlight night vision system, delivering full-color 4K images even after dark. IRCut switching and near-infrared illumination allow operators to capture clear images in bright sunlight, low-light, or backlit conditions.

It also features an 11x continuous optical zoom, a 176x hybrid zoom, and a three-axis mechanical gimbal with electronic image stabilization (EIS), allowing users to inspect distant subjects from a safe distance while keeping images steady. In practical terms, this means infrastructure inspections, emergency assessments, and security operations can continue without putting personnel at risk.

According to GDU’s official specifications, the drone “delivers unparalleled clarity with its 50MP UHD pixels, 4K AI-powered full-color night vision, and advanced optical de-fogging, ensuring crystal-clear imagery in any weather.”

One of the biggest fears for drone pilots is losing GPS signal, especially in “urban canyons” or under bridges. The P300 handles this by using Visual SLAM (Simultaneous Localization and Mapping). Essentially, the drone uses its own cameras to map its surroundings and “remember” where it is, allowing it to navigate safely even if satellite signals are blocked or jammed.

The drone also features a 2 km laser rangefinder allowing operators to pinpoint, measure, and mark targets, with data instantly shareable via GDU’s UVER platform. This real-time capability can accelerate decision-making for first responders or survey teams.

Thermal awareness and multi-payload versatility

Beyond standard imaging, the UAV-P300 features an AI-enhanced thermal imaging module. It improves contrast and highlights heat sources, anomalies, or movement — critical for search-and-rescue operations or inspecting infrastructure in darkness or poor visibility.

The drone supports multiple payloads, including mini night-vision systems, quad-sensors, speakers, spotlights, and AI processing units, making it adaptable for complex, multi-tasking missions. GDU positions the UAV-P300 as a one-drone solution for smart cities, ecological monitoring, emergency firefighting, event security, and power grid inspection.

Available for purchase later this month

GDU confirmed that the UAV-P300 will be available for purchase starting late January 2026, targeting enterprise and government operators rather than hobbyists. With a maximum flight time of 50 minutes and an operational ceiling of 6,500 meters, it promises all-weather, all-terrain performance for those who cannot wait for perfect conditions.
