China’s robots can now box, dance, and play ping-pong, but whether they can clock in for a real shift without stumbling is the multibillion-dollar question dominating Beijing this week.
The World Robot Conference 2026 opened Wednesday in Beijing with more than 300 exhibitors presenting over 2,000 exhibits, including more than 150 products making their global debut, according to Beijing authorities cited by Reuters.
The five-day event, running through Aug. 23, comes as China's robotics industry enters a new phase. Humanoid robots have become a major investment story, but manufacturers now face pressure to prove their machines can perform useful work reliably and at a competitive cost.
The conference has also expanded its focus beyond flashy demonstrations. A dedicated area features 49 centrally administered state-owned enterprises presenting 12 application scenarios, while a new "robot consumption street" offers food and drinks prepared by robots, the Global Times reported.
From spectacle to factory floor
The shift toward practical applications is visible across the exhibition.
UBTECH is demonstrating industrial robots designed to move components, while Leju is showing humanoids sorting and moving objects. Other companies are presenting robots for parcel handling, phone packaging and education, Reuters reported.
There are still plenty of crowd-pleasers. Unitree's robots boxed, danced and played ping pong, while other exhibits included a rideable robotic horse and robots designed for emotional care.
But a simple shirt-folding demonstration exposed the industry's limits. One helper robot spent several minutes attempting the task and failed, according to The Associated Press. That gap between impressive movement and dependable work is becoming central to the industry's next test.
The economics behind the excitement
China's robotics sector is growing quickly. Revenue from Chinese robotics enterprises above a designated size exceeded 300 billion yuan ($44.45 billion) in 2025, while first-half 2026 revenue reached 165.5 billion yuan, up 24.5% year over year, Vice Minister of Industry and Information Technology Xin Guobin said at the opening ceremony, according to the Global Times.
Yet high prices remain a barrier. Reuters cited estimates that industrial humanoids typically cost 300,000 to 500,000 yuan, while a Chinese brokerage estimated a robot would need to cost about 160,000 yuan, including maintenance, to repay its cost within two years.
The problem is not limited to China. Companies worldwide are wrestling with deployment, maintenance, skilled operators and other costs surrounding robotic labor.
The next test is productivity
The most important development at WRC 2026 may therefore have little to do with how lifelike or athletic a robot looks.
China's industry has reached a point where hardware, artificial intelligence, chips, data and software must work together in real-world settings. The challenge is turning those pieces into machines that can complete repetitive jobs, handle unexpected problems and operate with limited human supervision.
Reuters reported that robotics analyst Georg Stieler estimates 50% to 70% of humanoid robots produced this year could end up in "data factories" collecting training data rather than doing productive work for paying customers.
That suggests the coming shakeout will be less about which company has the most impressive robot and more about which one can make the technology economically useful.
