Oracle Expands Health Clinical AI Agent With Coding and Chart Review

For physicians buried in administrative work, Oracle is promising to give back one of their scarcest resources: time.

According to Oracle, the note-generation capability in Oracle Health Clinical AI Agent has saved U.S. physicians more than 400,000 hours in the nearly two years since its launch. The company did not disclose how it calculated the figure or whether it was independently verified.

Oracle has expanded Oracle Health Clinical AI Agent in the United States with real-time dictation, AI-assisted chart review, and suggested professional fee codes for outpatient visits. The features can transcribe speech into clinical documentation, surface relevant information from electronic health records, and recommend charge codes for clinicians to review.

How Oracle’s new clinical AI features work

One of the key arguments that Oracle Health has put forward for integrating this innovation into healthcare systems is that physicians should be focused on patient-care and not administrative tasks like taking down notes. 

Randy Thompson, Chief Health Analytics Officer at Billings Clinic, described the effect on physicians: “Oracle Clinical AI Agent has allowed us to focus on improving the physicians’ lives by reducing the documentation and cognitive burden and allowing physicians to spend more time doing the things they love.”

Although the agent helps to document the work, the responsibility to review, edit and finally submit the record lies on the clinicians. 

Human review remains an important part of the AI-assisted workflow. Clinicians can dictate into text fields while the agent transcribes their speech for review, editing, and finalization.

Besides assisting with documentation, the agent can recommend professional fee charge codes based on conversations during patient visits. After seeing a patient, the agent proposes the fee codes from the patient-doctor conversations. Oracle says that this approach “limits rework caused by inaccuracies or incomplete information.” 

As with agent-assisted documentation, the physician also takes the final decision on what fee code enters the system.

How health organizations can respond 

Chief Medical Information Officers (CMIOs) have a challenge to evaluate whether they should incorporate a system like Oracle Health into their enterprise software. 

The Oracle Health Clinical Agent adds significant efficiencies to physician interactions with patients; however, it also presents some new challenges regarding data privacy and safety. 

Allowing autonomous actors to access Electronic Health Records (EHR) possess potential data security risks to patients’ medical history, given the recent “rogue-agent” behavior by agents from companies like OpenAI and Anthropic. The risk is real and present. 

However, Oracle says that it has safeguards at the platform level. This includes defenses against known attack patterns like data poisoning, prompt injection and sensitive output manipulation. 

Oracle Health Clinical Agent has shown that it can increase physician productivity through taking on routine tasks that aren't directly related to patient-care. As hospitals look for innovative ways to provide better services, AI agents might be a solution to consider.
