LG Corp. and Nvidia announced plans to develop a bipedal humanoid robot for a public unveiling in the first quarter of 2027.
The companies signed a memorandum of understanding on Aug. 13 at Nvidia’s headquarters in Santa Clara, California. LG Corp. Chairman and CEO Kwang Mo Koo and Nvidia founder and CEO Jensen Huang attended the signing, which covers robotics, AI factories, and automotive software.
Under the agreement, Nvidia will supply much of the robot’s computing and AI foundation. The upcoming robot will run on Nvidia’s Jetson Thor processing unit, Isaac GR00T foundation model, and Halos safety framework.
LG plans to draw on capabilities across LG Electronics, LG Innotek, and LG Energy Solution, including actuators, sensors, and batteries. The announcement did not specify which subsidiary would provide each component.
"The defining opportunity of physical AI is to give every machine the ability to understand the real world, reason and act safely alongside people — reshaping everyday life from the home and factory floor to the road," Huang said in a joint announcement.
Before unveiling the humanoid robot, LG plans to validate its wheeled CLOiD robot on a washing machine production line at LG Electronics’ Tennessee plant by the end of 2026.
The companies will also develop a robot data factory powered by LG CNS’s PhysicalWorks platform. LG says it will support continuous data collection, synthetic-data generation, training, and verification while helping improve the company’s in-house Robot Foundation Model.
"As our discussions have moved fast, our tasks and goals in AI Factory and Physical AI have become clear," Koo said. "We will accelerate the spread of AI by building industry-leading references."
The double-edged sword of shared silicon
Teaming up with Nvidia gives LG an immediate shortcut past years of basic software development, but it also carries distinct commercial risks. Because Nvidia makes its Isaac GR00T platform available to other robot developers, access to the technology alone is unlikely to give LG an exclusive advantage over rivals such as Tesla and Boston Dynamics.
Instead, LG’s ultimate market advantage will depend entirely on manufacturing efficiency, battery endurance, and component reliability. If industrial buyers and homeowners find hardware components failing under continuous load, software intelligence alone will not rescue the product.
Expanding beyond robotics
The collaboration extends past mechanical workers into high-capacity infrastructure and connected transit.
LG plans to build an AI factory reference site powered by Nvidia’s Vera Rubin platform in the first half of 2027, followed by an 80-megawatt AI factory in Cheonan, South Korea, during the first half of 2028. In automotive tech, LG will pair its infotainment systems with Nvidia’s DRIVE Hyperion platform to pitch integrated driving and in-cabin cockpits to global automakers.
